Tetrapod are prefabricated concrete elements placed on the surface of breakwater, which plays the role of wave absorbing and wave resisting, protects the core structure of the breakwater from being scoured by waves, and prevent the amoy collapse.

Breakwater and bank protection engineering is an important part of harbor construction, and its engineering cost accounts for a large proportion in the port construction cost, sometimes up to 40%~50%. The hydraulic performance of the tetrapod will directly affect the safety of structures such as breakwater and bank protection, the size of the embankment section, the height of the embankment top, etc. Therefore, It is an important technical subject to study the high stability, low reflection, high climbing, economical and easy construction of the protective block.

In 1949, France first launched the tetrapod, and when the patent protection period ended, it was widely popularized around the world. Into the 1960s, many countries are actively engaged in the research and development of profiled tetrapods, so far more than 100 kinds of concrete profiled blocks have been developed. Subsequent research and improvement of common profiled tetrapods are continued. After the reform and opening up in China, large-scale land reclamation and port construction have been carried out to further promote the development of China's tetrapods.
